On June 6, Arianna Huffington and Mika Brzezinski co-hosted the Huffington Post’s first-ever women’s conference, “The Third Metric: Redefining Success Beyond Money & Power.” Huffington and Brzezinski’s conference for women will focus on coming up with a new definition of what it means to be successful; a definition of success that will create a healthier and happier working environment in America. As of now, the two measures of success that the American workplace thrives on are money and power. This definition of success is narrow and limited as it only includes a small percentage of the population. Every day, more and more “successful” people are tumbling down the ladder that they once worked so hard to climb up to reach this status of “success.” Our current standards of success are not only narrow and exclusive but they are unstable and volatile as it is nearly impossible to retain this definition of “success” for an entire lifespan.
Huffington and Brzezinski, are well aware of America’s failing definition of success that causes many Americans unhappiness and health problems (insomnia, anxiety, and deteriorating friendships to name a few). Not only do these two brilliant women recognize this large issue at hand, they created a worldwide discussion to address the malignant standards of success that we imbibe and measure ourselves by. In their conference “The Third Metric,” Huffington and Brzezinski took on the great challenge of coming up with, according to Huffington, “a more humane and sustainable definition of success that includes well-being, wisdom, wonder, empathy, and the ability to give back.” One purpose of the conference is to generate new benchmarks of success and erase the old male-dominated notions of success that inevitably results in dissatisfaction and distress for both men and women. Brzezinski recently mentioned that she anticipated to “share secrets of success, especially secrets behind achieving the Third Metric” as well as imparting the knowledge that success does not have to result in sacrificing your health and happiness.
The conference consisted of a myriad of complex, deep, and personal panels like “Managing a Frenetic life” with Susan Cain and Joanna Coles, “Mind/ Body Connection” moderated by journalist and television host Katie Couric, “Wellness and the Bottom Line” moderated by Brzezinski herself, “Taking Care of our Human Capital,” and “Do Men Get it?” also moderated by Brzezinski.
Though the conference wraps up on June 6, the conversation will certainly continue and you can play a significant role in it. Huffington post has launched a new section “The Third Metric: Redefining Success Beyond Money & Power” that will feature blog posts on practically anything relevant to the topic. You can join this conversation by sending a post to Arianna Huffington or by tweeting using the hashtag #thirdmetric. Become part of this nationwide conversation among women and help redefine the male created definition of success that drives both women and men alike to the brink of insanity.
